There's not much to write about this evening, since we have had a rather relaxing, chilled Friday. Tomorrow we are heading to Kobe for the day, so I thought it would be a good idea to take it easy today. We have had early starts every morning, so a lie-in until 6 am was welcome. God knows I needed some sleep, and after a few beers last night, I slept like a baby — but then I always do when I am on holiday.
Today wasn't about sightseeing; it was about doing things that weren't too taxing on the brain. We did, however, visit the rather nostalgic Tsutenka Tower in Osaka. This fine example of 1950s architecture was built in 1956 and is a homage to all things retro, in the heart of the city. It isn't particularly tall, but it is a must-see destination for all you 50s fans out there. Today's weather was clear, so we were able to get some great photographs from the top of the structure, but that was it. Neither of us wanted to do anything else, especially with a busy day ahead tomorrow.

We did, however, make our way to Dotonbori, where we did yet more shopping. Darrell wanted to buy me a Birthday present, which gave me some time to myself, quietly walking around this colourful area. Japan has certainly grown on me since I arrived here. Despite my initial reservations, I am warming to the Japanese way of life. They are certainly more formal than I am used to, but that is part of their respectful, charming nature. Like in Soul, South Korea, I feel safe walking the streets. There is no crime, very little litter or rubbish on the streets, and local people have all been willing to help us when we have needed directions or support.
Osaka is a much friendlier city than Tokyo by all accounts, which has helped us adjust effortlessly into the local scene. Indeed, you don't see many foreign tourists in Osaka, but there has been a significant number this year, and their numbers are growing all the time.

We did have a long lunch down by the river in Dotonbori this afternoon, which was the perfect place to sit and people-watch. There was a group of European tourists sitting at the table next to us, who were extremely rude to the waiting staff, which really rattled me. I'll never understand why people go on holiday to abuse residents — this is their bloody home. It is completely unnecessary, rude, and disgusting. I felt like saying something to them, but to be honest, the guy causing all the trouble was bigger than me, so I thought better of it.
... And that was our rather non-eventful day — nothing exciting, cultural, or rigorous. A laid-back, easy-going Friday, eating good food, drinking beer, and tasting ice cream. This was what the doctor ordered! And probably something Darrell and I should do more of on holiday!
